CONEJO VALLEY BONSAI SOCIETY
July 2007
We are in the middle of summer and I hope you are having a good one. We are having another workshop meeting in July so don’t forget to bring your trees, wire, tools and whatever you need. The meeting is again the regular day and time at the
Westlake Village Town Hall, Thursday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Since we need to be out by 10:00 p.m. sharp clean up has to start earlier, may I suggest you arrive on time so we can start on time and give you all the time you need to finish your work.
Descanso Bonsai Club is planning an outing to see the Bristlecone Pines near Bishop. This is a wonderful trip to the oldest trees in the world. The date is August 11-12, 2007. The cost covers the bus trip, soft drinks, snacks, and lunch going up and back. Dinner Saturday will be on your own. Cost for this is $45.00. They have reserved ten rooms at the Day’s Inn in Bishop for $85.00 plus tax. Each room has two queen beds, coffee maker, refrigerator, radio, TV, hairdryer and all rooms reserved are non-smoking.
There is also a
swimming pool and hot tub. If you are interested please send a check to: Elizabeth Likes, 9916 Rancho Caballo Drive, CA 91040. Her e-mail is lizlikes@aol.com for more information. It is a great trip.
August we will have Kathy Benson doing a demonstration. I know you will be looking forward to this. September will be another workshop; and, Bob Pressler will visit us in October. Don’t forget
October 6 and 7 is our Exhibition at the
Gardens or the World so your plants must be ready and impressive by then.
July tips by Jim Barrett:
Many bonsai-related chores may be done his month. Finish candle pruning your black pines if you still have trees needing attention.
It goes without saying that we must pay attention to our watering procedures. I usually water in the morning and again, if needed, about 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon. Not all trees will be dry by late afternoon, but if the drainage is good, it won’t hurt to water again.
Repotting (pot to pot) is risky at this time of the year but it can be done if necessary. Do not disturb the root system too much if you must repot now.
Olive, pomegranate, and some junipers can be potted (growing container to pot) now, if you over pot and are careful with the root system. Mornings and overcast days are best for this operation.
Light fertilizing during summer is OK. Spend a few moments each day with your trees and enjoy them. |
July Refreshments to be provided by: Bob Stradling (drinks) and Ted Sorensen (cookies)
