October 2007 Newsletter

We had a great show, with a very large and enthusiastic crowd. The display was very clean and well planned thanks to Marj and Paul. We only had ten out of thirty-five members display their trees. I hope next year we have a better number.  Marj said that we had at least 16 people sign up for more info on our club.  Hopefully we will get some of them to join.

A reminder our meeting this month is the 3rd Monday October 15th. It will be a workshop meeting so bring some of your trees and get them well on the way for our next show.

Thanks to Debby & Guy we are getting known in the area, – we have had notices in the Acorn and Thousand Oaks Star, also we have been mentioned in the 805 magazine.  Debby also has been setting up our monthly programs. Tom McGuire is taking care of our web page, which I sure appreciate.

Some October tips from Jim Barrett:
Fall is approaching and as the temperature and weather become more moderate, several bonsai procedures might be considered.
If you have not already done so, remove unwanted new growth and candles from Japanese Black Pine. Leave 1, 2 or 3 new candles on each branch and twig terminal.

How many you leave depends on your design goals for each tree. Next month will be clean up and detailing time.  Juniper bonsai, especially Foemina Juniper, can be pruned drastically and wired for detail now.

Wisteria, Ume, Crab Apple, and Quince should have set their buds by now. You may now prune or shape them, but make sure they have lost their leaves.  Fertilize these trees with a low nitrogen, high phosphorous and potash fertilizer now and next month.

Try to control heavy top growth on Zelkova, Elms and Maples. Allowing heavy growth in the upper story of your trees to go unchecked can cause loss of taper and unsightly knobs and scars.
