Spring is almost here, and you already can safely repot some species of conifers. This is always an exciting time of year for bonsai enthusiasts as dormant trees start to wake up and the growing season is just weeks away from starting in earnest.

Roy Nagatoshi will be at our February 15 meeting to do a Tree Critique. Roy, owner of Fuji Bonsai in Sylmar and second-generation bonsai artist, has a wealth of knowledge on bonsai. This will be an opportunity to get advice on one of your trees from a high-level bonsai professional. So, if you have a tree that you’d like to get analysis or guidance on, bring it with you to the February meeting.

I also want to remind everyone that the Golden State Bonsai Federation Bonsai-A-Thon is just around the corner. It will be at the Huntington Library and Gardens on February 24th and 25th. As a GSBF member club, we can get free admission to the event, but you must sign up for your free ticket in advance. The link to register for a free pass to The Huntington is embedded in the email that brought you this newsletter. Free tickets for club members are limited, so don’t wait to sign up! The deadline to submit this form is Friday, February 16, 2024.

As everyone probably knows by now, at our January meeting we started collecting membership dues for 2024. If you haven’t yet paid your dues, please pay now. See the Reminder box below or Membership on page 3 for payment details.

Special Workshop
On March 9th, CVBS will have a repot-ting workshop at the California Bonsai Studio in Thousand Oaks. It begins at 12:00 PM. There is a lot to learn about repotting trees correctly and safely, including root health and general root work that needs to be done to set your tree up for future success. We currently have twelve members who have indicated they are planning to attend, but we have space for a couple more. If you’re interested in going, please let me know at the February meeting.

See you at the meeting on Thursday, February 15!
